FULL LIST OF RIVERWOOD ACADEMY AWARDS 2016 NOMINEES AND VOTING PROCESS.

Gerald Langiri
February 25 / 2016

The nominees for the 3rd Riverwood academy awards were announced on 24th Feb 2016 at Planet Cinema in front of government dignitaries and Kenyan filmmakers to begin the voting process for yet another red carpet award ceremony that will take place on the 12th of March at the Kenya National Museum from 6pm to 11pm.

Riverwood Academy Awards was formulated to recognize the work of filmmaker’s women who have offered alternative entertainment from the popular Hollywood films. Through these awards the Ensemble hopes to market their actors, producers and services to be able to attract the corporate world, the government and non government agencies to work with them and tap into their talent. It is the Riverwood people who tell the Kenyan story in the Kenyan way.

The growth of the awards has seen it open its doors to filmmakers who would otherwise be describe as “mainstream” and thus provide more competition and see an increased in the quality of productions coming out of the Riverwood ensemble.

This year’s 7 member jury consisted of; Producer Appie Matere, Content creator and distributor Wangeci Murage, Eugene Mbugua, Kenyatta University Theatre and Film arts lecturer Dr. Zippy Okoth, Charity Macharia, Machawood CEO Victor Muniafu, Producer and Chief Judge at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards 2016 Njoki Muhoho.

There were a total of 72 entries in this year’s awards with 49 Feature Films, 13 series, 7 short films and 3 films from Uganda.

From the Jury’s perspective the quality of entries has improved from the previous years with Series and short films in particular getting so much recognition for their quality stories and execution. The jury noted that the feature films are not of the same technical quality as that of the shorts and despite having good stories, the technical part is still lacking for most. The pace is too slow for feature films and therefore film makers need to take time to polish their scripts. This prompted the jury to put feature films and short films in the same category.
