KALASHA AWARDS NOMINEE AMINA ABDI’S RANT TO PEOPLE HATING ON NEW ACTORS
Any Kenyan actor who is “making it” or has “made it” will tell you how hard it is. Now, what you use to judge what “making it” looks like totally depends on what your dreams are. To many starting out actors, it is probably to have that 1st acting gig and the next after that and get to the point where you can actually make a living out of acting. If you are like Amina Abdi Aisha , perhaps making it might also mean getting a Kalasha nomination in the Best Supporting actress TV category for her role in Maisha Bure.
Nominated alongside - Ruth Wacuka (of Housemates), Amalie Chopetta (of Saida) and Nancy Karanja (of Beba Beba), Amina has a personal rant to all the haters and people trying to put her down.
A 1st time nominee, this is what she has to say:
“I want to rant and rant I will about acting. Acting is what I love, it’s my true connection to my emotions and it pisses me off when people say bad things about it. It had been a daily anthem for new entrants to say that only old faces are featured in movies, well paying productions and all......I had been one of them until I learnt that my hard work is what will put me there at the top, so I started going for even the smallest of auditions and got several roles. As small or big as they were, I took them for the love of what I do and because art feeds the deepest part of my soul.
I know I am not there yet and as eager as many of you will be to want to eat my flesh saying “we don’t know you or you are speaking as whom and for whom?” I will still speak my mind. I may not be anything like my heroes Angelina Jolie, Ken Ambani or Carolyne Odongo the legendary actress and director but allow me to say a few things.....People always say, including the President himself, that we should always advocate for local content viewing and everyone seems to agree with that until they see progress.
I have heard so many people say “oh this movie shouldn’t have been nominated for Kalasha ......oh this actress isn’t good enough .....oh this actor has no presence in what he does.....Oh why did you not put this actor in the list of nominees........oh we don’t know any of those guys in the list......Oh these new comers can’t beat so and so.... BLAH BLAH BLAH” As new as whoever is out there no one has the right to judge you, everone gets what they work for so if your sixty or so years in the art industry has never even gotten you a nomination or recognition it isn’t anyone's fault so don’t say newcomers get recognition out of pity. They have worked hard for that. If you say you don’t know them, try viewing local content instead of the western series you always want to watch and you will see where these guys are and how they bust themselves for what they love for little or no pay and still get satisfied because they have dreams and believe that they will grow so stop being jealous of each other whether you are new or old in any part of the art industry.
For the guys who have been to thousands of auditions, walked and sweated for what they love and are still being put down I say to you “YOU ARE BRAVE AND DON’T GIVE UP,TALENT IS FROM WITHIN AND IF ANY PART OF ART IS YOUR CALLING THEN DO IT AND AS NEW AS YOU ARE IN ANY INDUSTRY LEARN TO CELEBRATE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AND BLOW YOUR WHISTLE WHILE YOU STILL CAN, I BELIEVE IN YOU,PLEASE BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.....WHETHER I WIN OR NOT MY DREAMS ARE VALID! GOD IS GREAT!”
With Kalasha happening on 25th July at National Museums, does Amina have a valid case to rant or is pressure getting to her?
