6 MYTHS ABOUT PIRACY THAT NEED TO BE CLEARED
MYTH 1: Piracy creates Jobs & fights poverty. FACT is: Piracy creates a black market for stolen goods. Those are not legitimate jobs. Secondly the income one generates by selling 50/- movies is subsistence income. It does not compare to the massive multi-billion shilling revenues that a legitimate supply chain can generate. The truth is Piracy perpetuates poverty by stifling investment, creativity and innovation.
MYTH 2: If you can’t beat them join them. Work with pirates to solve distribution challenges.
FACT is: Pirates don't have a proper distribution network. Their so called network is a parasitical network where pirates pirate from each other. There is no way you, the producer, can earn royalties from the piracy network. Pirating your own product is like taking a knife and sticking it into your own back in the name of fighting violent crime.
MYTH 3: You can fight piracy by making your product cheap.
FACT is: When you under price your product you don't undercut the pirates, you undercut yourself. Unlike you, the pirates never had any investment to start with. They have virtually nothing to recoup and nothing to lose.
MYTH 4: Pirates are uncontrollable. They are just too many.
FACT is: Hardcore pirates are just common criminals. They can be tamed easily if there is law enforcement will and good laws to back it up.
MYTH 5: Pirates give you free marketing and exposure. Once you are popular, you will make money through other means.
FACT is: Though that might be partially true in music, it is totally false in Movies and non-music content. Once you have produced content, it is up to the content to sell itself. The only avenue for performance (unlike music) is theatrical/cinema release and that sucks (too few theatres, too few attendees, theatre owners/operators want 50/50) in the end you are still left with peanuts. You can’t walk to a pub and get paid to perform your movie.
Secondly the popularity you get from piracy is infected by a hidden virus. All those people who become your fans through piracy also know very well that your stuff is best obtained from pirates. Who gains from your fame? The PIRATES!
Myth 6: Pirating foreign content doesn't affect local industry.
FACT is: When pirates sell illegal foreign DVDs they damage the market in many ways. First they create PRICE DISTORTION - an incorrect perception that local content is expensive. This has devastating consequences to anyone trying to penetrate the market legitimately. Secondly they TRAIN the public to seek Pirated content. This leads to REQUESTS for local content which - though never displayed - is pirated anyway! Third they create an uneven playing field where people making investments in legitimate content (creating numerous jobs along the way and contributing in so many ways to the economy) have to compete with people who simply downloaded and burned the content.
