DOUBLE THREAT VALENTINE ZIKI: THE STAGE IS MY FIRST LOVE

Valentine Ziki hails from the beautiful republic of Kenya where she grew up and discovered her artistic talents.ZIKI as she is commonly known as is a performing artiste. She started out performing poetry in her formative years in high school. After school, she moved on to dance and musical theatre. She?s been privileged to work with some of the industry?s prolific directors such as George Mungai & Millicent Ogutu both of Phoenix Theater, Eric Wainaina of Rainmaker Ltd, Peter Mudamba of Mbalamwezi Players, Keith Pearson of the Theater Company , Carole Odongo to mention but a few.

She co-starred in the movie “Selfish”, directed by Hawa Eusman (who went on to direct the internationally acclaimed movie, Soul Boy), has been featured on MNET?s Changes season 2 and Guy Center. She is currently involved in freelance opportunities as a TV host (webisodes) and is keen on horning her skills, while at the same time exploring new dimensions to her craft. Theatre is also not new to her and the perfomance she recently gave in the play 'In the Eyes Of A Stranger' at the Phoenix Theatre was worth every cent.

She has done several voice over advertisements for brands like Safaricom Ltd, UBA , Femiplan (Psi), SIRI radio drama(Psi & Nation Media), Coffee Board of Kenya TVC, Zain TVC, Always TVC, Whitestar (BIDCO) , Omo(Unilever Kenya), Dealfish, Duracoat, YU Mobile and Orange.

An outstanding singer & songwriter, Ziki has steadily cut a niche for herself as a versatile performer with a diverse repertoire. She incorporates different sounds to create her own distinct stylesx of Afro-soul & Urban Fusion.
Her first single „Nenda? was well received but it?s the follow up „Fly away? that has received rave reviews, with fans of her music eagerly anticipating her debut album, due to be released in 2013.

She describes herself as a voice of the unspoken, a visionary; curator of expression, time and experiences.
"I express emotions, situations, ideas, ideals and experiences. I inspire and mirror my surroundings and the society at large. My work is to inspire and ignite the world with my craft. I speak for the masses and various issues affecting them. From social justice to freedom, love, resilience and education. My music is also entertaining and uplifting. A real passion”. she says

She performs with a five piece band known as 'SABA' which comprises of a guitarist, percussionist and background vocalist. She represents a dynamic crop of artistes in Kenya?s vibrant music scene. Hers is a soulful sound; an energetic performance with a stage presence reminiscent of jazz and African artistes that have influenced her over the years.

Her instrument of choice is her voice and the rhythm guitar. Her creative process as both experiential and introspective.

In 2012, she was selected to be one of the participants representing Nairobi in the "Train the trainer" workshop under the theme: CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP FOR MUSICIANS AND VISUAL ARTISTES ON DEVELOPING STRATEGIES FOR MARKETING OF CULTURAL GOODS AND SERVICES USING INFORMATION, COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) ; facilitated by UNESCO and the Ministry State for National Heritage and Culture.

Thereafter, Valentine had the opportunity of facilitating her first training courtesy of the Ministry of State for National Heritage and Culture, under the theme: ICT AS A MEDIUM FOR COMMERCE AND AS AN EFFECTIVE MODE FOR EFFECTIVE NETWORKING AND MARKETING ART PRODUCTS.

Last year 2012, Valentine graduated with a diploma in Creative Entrepreneurship through the Go Down Arts Centre Entrepreneurship Course.

Valentine also took the time to perform for charity in two events namely: the ‘V-monologues’ whose proceeds went towards the Fistula Foundation, in order to help offset the cost of treatment for women with the fistula condition. In December 2011, she was invited to perform at the ‘Share-A-Smile‘ concert and helped collect clothes, food and toys, which were donated to ‘Mother Teresa’, a home for senior citizens and orphaned children. It was geared towards encouraging people to share and assist the under privileged communities during the Christmas season. Ziki is passionate about her community and is always interested in finding ways to create a positive impact.
