If you remember the VOK morning soundtrack then you are old. If you KNOW what “VOK” is, then you are even older. But those of us who did not exist prior to independence, and shortly there after, intimately got to know VOK’s child KBC. For decades the national broadcaster was the only source of entertainment in the country, and for all our non-stop complaints about it, it defined an entire generation of Kenyans.

There were no Nicki Minajes, no Lady Gagas and no Chris Browns and no Rihannas. There was Vioja Mahakamani, Vitimbi, Tahamaki, Tausi and all things Stone Cold Steve Austin. Back when cartoons had irregularly large heads and couldn’t say things like “ass” and get away with it.

I am not saying it was a better time. But it damn sure was simpler. The following are things certain Kenyans may identify with:

The first fifteen minutes of EVERY newscast on KBC were dedicated to the movements, utterances of former President Moi. Tyrant, oppressor, conspirator…He has been labeled them all and in his 25 year reign he proved a lot of those labels to be true.

However, a lot of Kenyans have those words seared into their psychies…_“Rais Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi leo…”_

It was not Kenyan. It was actually Cameroonian. But comedy in Kenya was largely defined by the contents of this video.

Comedy in Kenya was not comedy without grown men stuffing their shorts with padding around the buttocks and painting white beards on themselves.

So, most comedy groups in Kenya featured some form of this humor. These things used to make Moi very happy. Or so we believe based on his reactions as Zangalewa troupes performed.

1.Tausi

There are a lot of television shows today making claim to being “the first” of their kind on television. Bad news all ye false prophets! Tausi was the original Kenyan soap opera.

Don’t freak out about that hazy bit at the top of the screen. That’s just tape technology…ask grandad. He knows what I am talking about. Although to him that was his version of a Zune…Google “Zune”.

The only reason this is here is because I could not find a link to Tahamaki. Tahamaki was the first Kenyan “Cop Show”. To this day I have nightmares because it was rather gory for a television show airing during Nyayo’s reign.

When I was a kid I DID NOT go outside at night because Tahamaki led me to believe that there are some very bad people outside. Luckily now that I am an adult, I know it is true and do not go outside anyway.

Don’t even try and act like you don’t know this song. Another one branded into the minds of some Kenyans. It also was not a Kenyans show but it ran for SO long and was so gripping that many Kenyans identify with the song alone.

4.Ramayan

This also happened…Although I am not particularly sure why. All I remember is that it happened.
