REALITY. UNITY. LOVE. ELEGANCE. SERIOUSNESS | THE R.U.L.E.S OF ACTING
The reality, unity, love, elegance, seriousness are all the hallmarks of the rules of engagement in any work of art, acting especially. Reality is when you know that you have one life to live, if you want to build a little kingdom down here, then live today like it is the last day of your life, do what pertains to your talent to the best of your ability, I told you what art and science in acting can do and what you require to borrow from the two extremes, when you add the reality of the profession- that jokers are not supposed to mock the show by being imposters, then you truly embrace the true worth and life of an artist.
Unity must have purpose, I believe that it all starts with you, how you like the person smiling back at you when you do a bathroom pose for your mirror to judge, the mind, body and soul must be a unifying factor in the character and personality of who you want to be. No part of organ or spirit should be left behind. You have the talent as the source of your unity of purpose as an artist, please don’t rely on your talent alone.
LOVE IS THE GREATEST commandment for the Christian believers, it is in all the holy books including the acting bible which is yet to be written, if you don’t love what you do as an actor, then you should quit the business of associating yourself with the trade and profession. If you are passionate about what you do and do it well out of love, then you will get better and more jobs will come calling. You can never hurt what you love because of minor disagreements with the producer, a crew or a cast member; you will always rise above any challenge due to the love of acting. Love is a very powerful emotion and motivator, ask yourself whether you really love acting or you are in it because it pays the bills.
Elegance- acting has beauty and grace in it, it looks beautiful when well articulated and played out whether on screen or stage, it has a cool memorable significance which is embedded not only in the mind, heart and soul, but also in the kingdom of the legacy that the actor leaves behind. Remember Sean Connery? He still rocks as the best James bond ever, due to the majesty of how he brought out the role, he immortalized the character of James bond, making sure that he left the elegance completely pasted in the eyes of our memory…can you bring elegance into a role… talent and love is not enough….
And to crown it all, please be serious as an artist, if you want to grow, you must seize every opportunity you can get your hands on to be better, you don’t get a marquee name from your first screen job unless you are very lucky, don’t start shouting terms to a producer or director before the rashes have dried or the tapes have been captured for editing…..anything can happen, pride and ignorance comes before a fall, be very serious about who you are, where you want to go and know why. Bad company will let you down, if you have people giving you bad advice about your career and you are letting them then you are not serious about where you are heading as an actor.
You have to know the following:
- Reforms are not necessary where transformation is what is required.
- Evolution creates new while revolutions achieve minor changes.
- The person looking back at you in the mirror is the only one you should trust as what you see is what is there, the true worth of your career is measured in growth seen from one act to another, listening to your vision will help you to know the secret to becoming is accepting the need for change.
- Finally please get the understanding that going back to school helps a lot….if you get a chance to go back to school to perfect the art and science of screen acting please do.
